Carleton’s Annual Craft Fair and Bake Sale Returns to the Weitz Center

November 14, 2014

Carleton College will hold its annual Craft and Custodial Bake Sale on Friday, Dec. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Class of 1980 Commons of the Weitz Center for Creativity. A wide variety of hand-crafted items and baked goods will be available for purchase, including wool mittens, birdhouses, garden art, glass ornaments, rugs, quilts, jewelry, Kenyan products, wooden bowls and toys, baskets, outerwear, candles, and much more. This popular annual event is free and open to the public.

Each vendor’s entrance fee will be donated to the Carleton College Custodial Scholarship Fund. Last year, over 80 vendors participated in the event, from Carleton as well as the greater Northfield community.

Breakfast pastries and a lunch special will also be sold, again with proceeds going to the Custodial Scholarship Fund. Attendees are encouraged to stop by early, as supplies are limited!

Long-time Carleton employee Loretta Springer first organized this event in 1982, as a way to showcase and sell homemade items made by Carleton staff. Years later, the event continues to serve as a fun way to demonstrate the wide-range of hobbies and crafts engaged in by Carleton staff and community members, while also contributing to an important cause.

The Carleton College Custodial Scholarship Fund was established by Carleton custodian Pat Flynn in 1993. Over three-quarters of the custodial staff at Carleton donate back a portion of each paycheck to help fund an endowed scholarship given each year to at least one Carleton student. In 1997, Flynn organized the first annual bake sale in partnership with the craft sale to help raise money for the Scholarship Fund.

In 2013, there were $927 in baked goods sold and the craft fair raised $1,965 in tabling fees for a total raised of $2,892.

To register as a vendor and for more information, visit the Craft Fair website: https://apps.carleton.edu/events/craft_fair/. Contact Loretta Springer at (507) 222-4186 with any questions. The cost for a vendor spot is $20; fees will be donated to the Custodial Scholarship Fund. The Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity is located at 320 East Third Street in Northfield
