Top Twin Cities jazz guitarist, quartet to perform

September 22, 2015

Zacc Harris, considered one of the best jazz guitarists and composers in the Twin Cities, will perform in concert at the Carleton College Concert Hall on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. Harris will be joined by acclaimed musicians Bryan Nichols on piano, Chris Bates on bass, and Jt Bates on drums. This event is free and open to the public.

Harris has been a central figure in the Twin Cities jazz scene since moving to Minneapolis in 2005, and has quickly earned a reputation as one of the region’s best. His numerous creative projects include co-leading the Atlantis Quartet, winners of the 2015 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists, and himself being named City Pages' 2011 Best Jazz Artist.

Harris has also formed soul jazz groups Vital Organ, Monk in Motian, and a host of other groups.

Often called the “hardest working guitarist in Minnesota,” Harris recalls, “I came here because I knew that there was a good music scene, and especially good jazz scene that was unique and edgy, with great bands like Happy Apple and Fat Kid Wednesdays. I thought this would be a good place to grow musically. I think that it’s actually one of the strongest instrumental music scenes in the country.”

In 2012, Harris released The Garden on Shifting Paradigm Records, his debut album with the then newly-formed Zacc Harris Group. City Pages wrote, “’The Garden’ showcases Harris’ compositions, which adeptly and compellingly link the past and future of jazz, and guitar work, which is consistently articulate with an enticing fluidity seemingly influences by the likes of Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny.”

Jazz Improv Magazine says, “Harris delivers a sound that is lucid, clear…providing rich-sounding accompaniment, and well-crafted solos” and NPR News states, “Harris makes his own mark on standards with enough new hooks to keep jazz alive.”
