Carleton convocation to focus on body image and eating disorders

October 23, 2015

After recovering from her own ten-year battle with eating disorders, Johanna Kandel founded The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness in October 2000. Since then,  Kandel has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about eating disorders and the importance of positive body image to more than 160,000 students internationally.

Kandel will present Carleton College’s weekly convocation, entitled “Stepping Off the Scales: Eating Disorders and Body Image,” on Friday, Oct 30 from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. This event is free and open to the public. Carleton convocations are also recorded and archived online at go.carleton.edu/convo.

The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness is dedicated to providing programs and activities aimed at outreach and education related to health promotion, including eating disorders, obesity, positive body image, and self-esteem. Success to Kandel means helping even one person avoid traveling down the same road she did and continuing to use her voice in the fight against eating disorders. Additionally, Kandel facilitates weekly support groups, mentors individuals through their eating disorders treatment and recovery, helps thousands of people gain information and find the help they need, and advocates for mental health and eating disorders legislation. Kandel has appeared on national television programs including NBC Nightly News and The Today Show, and has been profiled in the New York Times and Glamour Magazine. Kandel is the author of the book, Life Beyond Your Eating Disorder: Reclaim Yourself, Regain Your Health, Recover for Good (Harlequin, 2010).

Kandel is the current President of the Board of Directors for the Eating Disorders Coalition, a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders Advisory Board, a founding board member of the Eating Disorders Activist Network, and Expert Advisory Committee member for Girl Future. She is an active participant in National Eating Disorders Awareness Month and has received many awards for her ongoing outreach and advocacy work.
