Symphony Band presents “In Response: Music That Highlights Significant Events”

February 16, 2016

The Carleton College Symphony Band will perform in concert Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Entitled “In Response: Music That Highlights Significant Events,” the performance highlights the power of music in a “divided” world, underscoring compelling life events with a goal of uniting around common themes of humanity.

“In Response” will feature music that honors victims of political unrest, racial tension, and religious conflict by highlighting human achievement and celebrating our great potential. Selections include Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, narrated by special guest Roger Bechtel; the traditional Irish Hymn, Be Thou My Vision; and a lively and festive Albanian “Shota” dance arranged by Shelley Hanson, as well as other compositions.

Under the direction of interim band leader Claire Larson, Carleton’s Symphony Band includes a diverse group of instrumentalists with a shared passion for celebrating the pure joy of music. “We have scientists, student government leaders, political activists, football players, and musicians from all over the country and the world who have found their ‘home’ in the Carleton band,” says Larson. “They love to play!”

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, including disability accommodations, please call (507) 222-4475.  The Concert Hall is located on First Street, between Winona and Nevada Streets, in Northfield.
