Acclaimed Israeli author Assaf Gavron to present Carleton’s annual Forkosh Family Lecture in Judaic Studies

May 5, 2016

Acclaimed Israeli author Assaf Gavron will present Carleton College’s annual Forkosh Family Lecture in Judiac Studies on Tuesday, May 10 at 8 p.m. in Severance Great Hall. Entitled “The Wild West Bank: The Perspective of an Israel Author,” Gavron will share his experiences living in and observing Jewish settler and Palestinian communities in the West Bank. This event is free and open to the public.

A renowned writer and translator, Gavron is the author of five novels, including the internationally-acclaimed novel, “The Hilltop.” A sprawling and daring novel that dismantles the extreme and absurd reality in the Israel-occupied West Bank, described as a “Catch 22 meets 21st-century Israel.” The book, a best-seller and recipient of numerous awards in Israel, provides prismatic views of diverse human visions and motives developing in a range of social contexts in and beyond Israel, and then intersecting in the West Bank. His fiction has been translated in ten languages and has been adapted for the stage in Israel’s national theater, as well as optioned for movies.

Among Gavron’s numerous international awards are the Prix Courrier International in France, the Buch fur die Stadt in Germany, a DAAD artists-in-Berlin residency, and the Bernstein Prize in Israel.

Assaf Gavron is the son of English immigrants to Israel. He grew up in a small village near Jerusalem, studied in Tel-Aviv and London, and currently lives in San Diego, California, where he teaches literature and creative writing at the San Diego State University. More at www.assafgavron.com.
