Members Appointed to Carleton College Board of Trustees

The Carleton College Board of Trustees recently announced the appointment of three new members: William “Bill” R. McLaughlin, John H. Stout ‘62, and Paul T. Van Valkenburg ’82.

Appointed as a full trustee, McLaughlin is the president, chief executive officer, and chairman of Select Comfort Corporation based in Minneapolis, manufacturers of mattresses and bedding accessories. He has a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a master’s degree from Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School of Business Administration. McLaughlin currently serves as trustee of The Blake School and The Amos Tuck School. He is a board member of Minnesota Public Radio, American Public Media Group, and the Aspen Institute. McLaughlin lives with his wife and three children in Minneapolis.

Stout, a member of the Carleton Class of 1962, will serve a four-year term as an Alumni Trustee. He is vice president, shareholder, and practicing attorney at the law firm of Fredrikson & Byron, P.A. Stout earned his law degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A member of the Minnesota Film and TV Board, Stout is the co-founder of New Front Films and was an executive producer of the 2006 Robert Altman film “A Prairie Home Companion.” Stout was a member of the Carleton Alumni Board from 1969-1977, serving as president from 1970-1975. He received the Carleton Distinguished Achievement Award in 1992. Stout lives in Minneapolis.

Van Valkenburg, a member of the Carleton Class of 1982, will serve a four-year term as a 25th Reunion Trustee. A veteran of Wall Street, Van Valkenburg is a founder and principal of Mortgage Industry Advisory Corporation in New York City. A life-long sports enthusiast, Van Valkenburg is a member of Carleton’s C-Club and was captain and president of the Hockey Club as a student. He lives in Garden City, N.Y.

The Board also recognized the distinguished service of two members completing their terms: Patricia “Pat” M. Beilman ’78 and Printice L. Gary ’68. Beilman has served Carleton as a 25th Reunion Trustee since 2003. A member of the Carleton Class of 1978, she is formerly the director of the Australian Center for Contemporary Art. After a career in advertising, sales, and marketing, Beilman currently focuses her energies at home raising her two children. Beilman lives with her family in New York City.

Gary has served Carleton as an Alumni Trustee since 2003. A member of the Carleton Class of 1968, he earned his master’s degree in finance from Harvard University and launched a career in business. He is currently the founder and chief operating officer of Carleton Residential Properties in Dallas. Gary has served on Carleton’s Alumni Board, the Multicultural Alumni Network Steering Committee, and the Alumni Annual Fund Board. He lives in Dallas.
