Frederick A. Rogers, a 1972 Carleton College graduate and the former chief financial officer of Carnegie Mellon University and Cornell University, has been appointed vice presidentfor business and finance and treasurer at Carleton. He will begin his new position on August 30.

Rogers graduated from Carleton with a B.A. in mathematics and went on to earn his M.S. with distinction from the School of Urban and Public Affairs, now the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management, at Carnegie Mellon University.

“Fred brings with him an uncommon level of expertise and wisdom, and all who have met with him were deeply impressed both by his financial management and leadership and by his understanding of Carleton and our mission,” said Carleton President Robert A. Oden Jr.

Rogers began his career in planning at Carnegie Mellon in 1974 and was appointed vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer in 1981. He joined Cornell University in 1990, where he served as vice president for finance and treasurer and subsequently as senior vice president and chief financial officer.

Rogers has used his background in public policy to work with both the Pittsburgh and Ithaca communities on issues of economic development, finding and implementing ways in which those universities might foster regional development. Most recently in his consulting practice, he has worked with The Boston Consortium schools to identify effective practices for endowment and debt management at 12 colleges and universities.

In his 30 years of experience in higher education, Fred has been active in professional organizations that include the National Association of College & University Business Officers (NACUBO), serving as chairman of its financial management committee, the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers (EACUBO), serving as a board member and treasurer, and as a board member and chairman of the Council of Government Relations (COGR). He is currently serving his third three-year term as a trustee of the Lebanese American University.

“I am honored and pleased that the search committee has invited me to join Carleton at this exciting time in its history,” Rogers said. “I look forward to returning to Northfield, to meeting more faculty, students and staff and to working with President Oden and the entire Carleton community to advance and build on the strengths and successes of the College. In this new role, I hope to find a way to return even more to the College and its future.”
