Carleton College will present Gioia De Cari in a performance of “Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’s Male Math Maze,” a one-woman show about the experience of a professional woman in the male-dominated field of mathematics, on Friday, April 13 in the Weitz Center for Creativity Theater. The performance, which takes place at 7 p.m. and will be followed by an open discussion, is free and open to the public. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made online at www.carleton.tixato/buy.

Created as a response to former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers’ controversial and widely-criticized suggestion that the under-representation of women in the sciences is due to innate gender differences, “Truth Values” is a real life tale that offers a humorous, scathing, insightful, and ultimately uplifting look at the challenges of being a professional woman in a male-dominated area of academia. Writer, performer, and “recovering mathematician” Gioia De Cari brings to life more than 30 characters in a hilarious and touching performance that has delighted audiences and critics alike.

De Cari is an actress, playwright, and classical singer who began her performance career in experimental opera while a teaching fellow in mathematical logic at Harvard University. Since that time, she has played numerous leading roles in theater and on screen, including the award-winning film “Lower East Side Stories.” Her second solo piece, “Truth Values,” premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival, where it won a Fringe NYC Overall Excellence Award and the high praise of critics,  who called the show, “funny and insightful… replete with hilarious characters… riveting.” (CurtainUp).

This event is sponsored by the Carleton College Department of Mathematics, as well as the Elizabeth Nason Distinguished Women Visitors Fund, Ethical Inquiry at Carleton, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the Michael Morrill Fund.
