Carleton College will present Gioia De Cari in a performance of “Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’s Male Math Maze,” a one-woman show about the experience of a professional woman in the male-dominated field of mathematics, on Friday, April 13 in the Weitz Center for Creativity Theater. The performance, which takes place at 7 p.m. and will be followed by an open discussion, is free and open to the public. Created as a response to former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers’ controversial and widely-criticized suggestion that the under-representation of women in the sciences is due to innate gender differences, “Truth Values” is a real life tale that offers a humorous, scathing, insightful, and ultimately uplifting look at the challenges of being a professional woman in a male-dominated area of academia. Writer, performer, and “recovering mathematician” Gioia De Cari brings to life more than 30 characters in a hilarious and touching performance that has delighted audiences and critics alike.
De Cari is an actress, playwright, and classical singer who began her performance career in experimental opera while a teaching fellow in mathematical logic at Harvard University. Since that time, she has played numerous leading roles in theater and on screen, including the award-winning film “Lower East Side Stories.” Her second solo piece, “Truth Values,” premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival, where it won a Fringe NYC Overall Excellence Award and the high praise of critics, who called the show, “funny and insightful… replete with hilarious characters… riveting.” (CurtainUp).
