Carleton College’s Black Students Alliance will host Step It Up II, a celebration of black expression through various forms of dance, on Sat., April 28 in the Weitz Center for Creativity. This event is free and open to the public.
Step It Up is one of Carleton’s most popular and widely attended annual events. In addition to performances by Carleton students and dance ensembles, Step It Up also showcases a wide variety of African-American dance forms presented by visiting groups from the Twin Cities and beyond.
This year, the event will feature a series of Hip-Hop Dance Master Classes, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and again from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Dance Room 165. Space is limited for these classes; reservations can be made at www.carleton.edu/activities.
At 2 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema, Safi A. Thomas, Yasmine Fequiere and Yvonne Chow of The Hip-Hop Dance Conservatory Repertory Company in New York City will present a lecture entitled “Immortal Resonance: The Mark of Purposeful Art.” For more information on the Hip-Hop Conservatory Repertory Dance Company, visit www.hdcy.com.
Step It Up II culminates with a not-to-be-missed performance at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall by members of the Chicago Aesop Steppers and The Hip-Hop Dance Conservatory Repertory Company.
