Composer and Stanford University music professor Mark Applebaum '89 presents a lecture-concert, including performances for jazz piano, a piece for hand gestures synchronized to pre-recorded sound, and the Mouseketier- an original electroacoustic sound-sculpture made of junk, hardware, and found objects. By sharing his wide-ranging and often idiosyncratic work as a composer, Applebaum attempts to harmonize notions of convention and experimentation. The talk will include a tutorial on how musical improvisers think, considerations about discipline and iconoclasm, and reflections on how his Carleton education enabled and impeded his developments as a creative artist.
