Film as an Instrument of Sociopolitical Change

Lecture by Cecilia Barriga's (Chile)

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015
12:00 – 1:00 pm / Gould Library Athenaeum

A conversation about the process of creation of Cecilia Barriga's (Chile) latest work that comes out of her political activism and involvement in movements seeking to change society. The results are a superimposition of subjectivities, starting with her own, but also of the people around her and the commitment to the processes of transformation of political realities. Cecilia Barriga will show examples of her experiences/views of the Greek crisis, the emergence of new political alternatives in Spain (such as Podemos), or, her take in Chilean students' movement and mobilizations.

During her intervention, the director will discuss how, by observing the spontaneous expression of the new social movements with a camera, an aesthetic appears that captivates and seduces the film maker's eye but also becomes a political ethics by which she feels actively represented. The audience will have the opportunity to see the raw material from which Cecilia Barriga has been constructing her latest pieces, fed by an enthusiasm matched by a skepticism that I trust protects my vision and work against naivete.

The presentation is accompanied by a screening of portions of my latest work.  The people attending are invited to take part in a collective conversation about what each of us understands as our political commitment and how we express that commitment.
