Global Southeast Asia?

From site: Wellstone House of Organization and Activism

Carleton Asia Project is delighted to bring Professor Williamson, a sociologist on Southeast Asia in St Olaf, to Carleton to give a talk on Southeast Asia transnational linkages. It has been a long time since there was a talk on Southeast Asia so do come and support! Delicious Southeast Asian food will be provided.

4:30 pm / LDC 104

The region now known as Southeast Asia has been tied to distant
places for
a long time. From the major world religions (Hindu, Buddhism,
Muslim,
Christianity) to the great imperial powers (Spain, Portugal, France,
Britain,
Holland, Japan, the United States), each has left its mark in this
diverse
part of the world. Following independence from colonial rule, great
battles of the Cold War produced vibrant forms of nationalism, and in
the
past 25 years industrialization has further transformed the region.
This
talk will cover discussions on the complexities of teaching about
such a
cosmopolitan place, and also explores possibilities offered by
Southeast
Asia in thinking about area studies in the era of globalization.
