March 12 - Eric Janus ’68

Eric, President and Dean of William Mitchell College of Law, has focused his scholarship on the interaction of law and psychiatry and other health sciences. His book, Failure to Protect: America's Sexual Predator Laws and the Rise of the Preventive State (Cornell U. Press, 2006), discusses the boundaries of the state's ability to use civil commitment to protect public safety. He will discuss the effectiveness of risk assessment, the place of danger assessment in society, and the public policy implications of the current approach to dealing with sexual violence. He also will note the potential implications of the "preventive state" for post-Guantanamo legislation. Eric will be glad to sign copies following the program.
