Frida Kahlo began painting in 1926, while recovering from a near-fatal bus accident, and soon became captivated by the medium’s expressive possibilities. Kahlo’s folkloric style, influenced by Mexican popular art, and her fantastical imagery earned her recognition among the Surrealists, but her intriguing persona and unmistakable originality propelled her beyond the confines of a specific movement to become a leading figure in modern art.
Professor Soth earned his Ph.D. from New York University and taught art history at Carleton 1964-2004. In his 40 years at Carleton, Professor Soth taught 40 different courses including American art and architecture. His lectures receive rave reviews from Carls around the country (and even a few in Northfield). He will be accompanied in San Francisco by his wife, Nancy.
