Victory Speaks! Kate Carlson, mother of first year Carleton student

As a tribute to Paul and Sheila Wellstone, Kate decided to break 15 years of silence following her survival from domestic abuse, including an attempted abduction and subsequent involvement in a case which helped set women and children‘s protection precedents in Minnesota. She went from giving birth while hiding under an assumed name, to earn a degree in occupational therapy and quietly continued the mission of violence prevention through helping others survive as she worked with families in transition from the United States, as well as international immigrants. Kate met the Wellstone’s while a client of Cornerstone and living in their battered women shelter system. She has moved victoriously on from violence and has seen countless more women and children achieve success and happiness after unimaginable suffering. Currently, she is a Cornerstone board member, serving as the public relations committee chairperson. Come and listen to a powerful message and be inspired to believe that through education and involvement there is hope beyond domestic abuse.
