In Full Circle: The Japanese-Style Garden as a Work of Art in Progress

by Carleton Professor Emeritus Bardwell Smith

Sunday, December 9, 2007 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens

426 Anderson Street, Durham

(Isobell Craven Drill Classroom in the Doris Duke

Center—across from the Duke Gardens Information Center)

Please join Carleton alums, parents, friends and current students at a showing of the film: In Full Circle. Professor Smith, Carleton’s John W. Nason Professor of Religion and Asian Studies, Emeritus, will give a short introduction to the film and lead a discussion afterward.

In Full Circle features Carleton's renowned “Garden of Quiet Listening.” Recognized as one of the top ten Japanese style gardens outside of Japan, the garden exemplifies the best practices and principles of design and maintenance. The video explores how these time-honored principles find expression in the Carleton garden, and the process by which the garden was created and has evolved since 1974. Included on the DVD is a lecture on the principles of Japanese style garden design given recently at Carleton by David Slawson, the garden's eminent designer.

This event is open and free to the public. Afterward, our Carleton group will be treated to a tour by Professor Smith of the Asian area of the Duke Gardens followed by light refreshments and discussion.
