“By Hand” is a unique exhibition curated by Carleton alumna Julie Martini.  The exhibit poses the question: What does it mean to be an artist whose process relies on handwork in an era when new media is on the rise, traditional artist’s skills are less important, and an artist’s idea may hold greater weight than the execution?  The exhibition features the work of five artists, including Ms. Martini, each of whom uses craft-based or labor-intensive methods to innovative ends.

Julie Martini '97 is a visual artist in Boston, Massachusetts.  In addition to making paper sculptures, collages, and hand-marbled drawings, she teaches art at the Pine Street Inn and the Eliot School of Fine and Applied Art.  Her work has been included in exhibits at the Bromfield Gallery in Boston, Art Space Gallery, the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and elsewhere.  She has been an artist-in-residence at Massachusetts General Hospital, and received an artist residency to the Women’s Studio Workshop.  You can view images of her recent work at www.juliemartini.info.
