Northern California C.A.N.O.E. Inaugural Hike

The Carleton Association of Nature and Outdoor Enthusiasts (C.A.N.O.E.) has been a very popular student organization on the Carleton campus for more than 30 years. Now C.A.N.O.E. is coming to Northern California!
Join us for our inaugural C.A.N.O.E. event: a six-mile hike on Barnabe Peak Loop, led by Lauren Janus '01.
The Loop is located in Samuel P. Taylor Park in west Marin County. The park is famed for its redwoods in the lush canyon of Lagunitas Creek. It covers 2,700 acres, and offers excellent hiking, biking and camping. Barnabe Peak Loop is the park's best trailhead. It leads to a hidden waterfall and a dramatic lookout. The six-mile loop hike includes a 1,300-foot climb to Barnabe Peak (1,466 feet high). On clear days, it provides spectacular views of the western foothills and the Marin coast.
People should wear normal Northern California hiking clothes (layers, boots, etc.) and bring water and a snack and maybe a camera if they want their picture taken inside of a giant redwood. The hike takes an average of three hours, however it could take longer for novice hikers. Some portions contain a steep grade of up to 13%.
Directions: From most Bay Area locations, you will drive north to the Sir Francis Drake Blvd. exit on Highway 101, near San Rafael in Marin County.
Go west on Sir Francis Drake for approximately 14.5 miles until you reach the signed entrance to Samuel P. Taylor State Park's campground. Continue on Sir Francis Drake for exactly one mile beyond the park's entrance. Then, look for a dirt pullout on the left shoulder. Locate it by spotting a small, paved access road for the Devil's Gulch Horse Camp on the right side. Park in the pullout. Walk across Sir Francis Drake and hike a short way to the Horse Camp access road to find the trailhead on your right.
The group will meet briefly at 1 p.m. at the trailhead to discuss plans for future C.A.N.O.E. events.
