Sustainable Building Tour

Saturday, March 15, 2008, 11 a.m.

John Umbanhowar ’92, a partner in Scott Hughes Architects in Venice, will lead a tour of a 5,000 square foot recently completed “Green” live/work project on trend-conscious Abbott Kinney Boulevard in Venice. The building is constructed to LEED specifications: encompassing sustainable building methods, materials and systems. Is this standard future building practice or just another passing trend that we witnessed during the 70’s energy crisis? Questions and discussion will be welcome during and after the tour! The tour will include lunch from the neighborhood deli on the roof deck, weather permitting.

Cost: $12 (includes tour and lunch) Lunch will be served at the house. Meet at the building at 11 a.m., located at 1214 Abbott Kinney Blvd.

The house is a 3 bedroom residence with a studio. It is designed for working and living under the same roof, and is located in an area of Venice that includes shops, restaurants, and residences. John will discuss the design features that make this a “green” building including the southern orientation, the solar heating, and the building methods.

Directions: From east (street is 5 blocks from ocean). Take 10 Fwy to 4th Street exit. Turn left on fourth street. Turn right at Pico Boulevard. Go west until Ocean Boulevard where you take a left turn. Follow this road south from Santa Monica into Venice, where it will turn into Pacific Avenue. At Brooks Avenue (traffic signal) turn left. Drive through next intersection and Brooks will turn into Abbot Kinney Boulevard. The building is approximately a 1/4 mile down the road from this intersection.
