Lauren Soth, Prof. of Art History Emeritus

who will present on the current Miró and Van Gogh exhibitions

Alumni, parents, and friends are invited to join Anne Umland ’80 and Prof. Lauren Soth for discussion and viewing of these exhibitions of works by two giants of modern art.

Anne Umland was named Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art in 2003. Most recently, Ms. Umland organized the exhibition What is Painting? Contemporary Art from the Collection (2007) and Focus: Alexander Calder (2007).  She recently co-edited Dada in the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art (2008). 

Professor of Art History, Emeritus Lauren Soth taught at Carleton for more than 40 years.  At Carleton, he taught seminars on Van Gogh and has published several articles on the artist including one on the painting "Starry Night", a centerpiece in the current exhibition.  His wife, Nancy Soth will be accompanying him.   

Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937 is the first major museum exhibition to identify the core practices and strategies Miró used to attack and reinvigorate painting between 1927 and 1937, a transformative decade within his long career.  

Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night:  Representing all periods of the artist's career, the exhibition will comprise over two dozen works of superlative quality -- several of which have never been seen together, even though they were very clearly conceived with each other in mind. 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. Presentations by Lauren Soth and Anne Umland ’803:20 p.m. View the exhibitions (on your own) 

Cost: $16 per person.  Space is limited to 40 for the presentations and 20 for the tours.
