The D.C. Carleton Club will co-host alumnus Kai Bird (Carleton ’73) at a speaker luncheon at the Woman’s National Democratic Club.  Kai includes his Carleton Years, Paul Wellstone, and the Anti-war Protests of the Viet Nam Era in his 2010 book Crossing Mandelbaum Gate: Coming of Age Between the Arabs and Israelis, combining memoir and history to describe his formative years, first as the child of an American diplomat and then independently, in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India, and—yes—Northfield, Minnesota.  (Mandelbaum Gate separates East and West Jerusalem.)  Kai is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author (with Martin J. Sherwin, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005)), and the advance reviews of Crossing Mandelbaum Gate promise a fascinating and sobering account of years of such importance in understanding the current conflicts of the Middle East.

The Woman’s National Democratic Club is located on the southwest corner of New Hampshire and Q Street.  The Club is a block and a half from the Dupont Circle Red Line station (turn right on Q at the top of the Q street Dupont Circle Station and walk east until you come to New Hampshire and make a right to our front door – you’ll have been walking alongside our brown brick clubhouse as you approach New Hampshire.)  There is public parking across the street closer to Dupont Circle.
