An Americana-Roots Evening!

Join other Carls, friends, and family at one of the Cities’ historic honky-tonks. It’ll be your Carleton experience, but concentrated and without the exams! Hosted by Ann Iijima '72.

7:00 p.m. – Reception and dinner with the band (Doc E's BBQ & cash bar)

8:00 p.m. – Americana-roots lecture/demonstration by Carleton faculty member Mark Kreitzer

9:00 p.m. – Music by the Mark Kreitzer Band (bluegrass), Patty and the Buttons (New Orleans-style traditional jazz and blues), and the ’53 Swingbillies (country-swing, rockabilly). More information on the bands below.

Start the evening with a reception and BBQ dinner with band members, featuring Doc E’s famous applewood-smoked pulled-pork sandwiches, southwestern pinto and black beans (vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions), red tater salad (vegetarian), cauliflower marranca (vegetarian), and fruit salad.

Before the bands perform various types of Americana-roots music, Mark Kreitzer will introduce you to these genre through a lecture/demonstration. What are they? Where did they come from? How are they different? Mark, a member of all three (and other) bands, is a multi-instrumentalist, teaching American Folk Instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass, mandolin, mandocello, mandola, Dobro, and ukulele) at Carleton. He was inducted into the Minnesota Rock and Country Hall of Fame as a long-time member of the Middle Spunk Creek Boys.

We'll also be having drawings throughout the evening for door prizes, including band CDs and a few items of Carleton memorabilia from Ann Iijima's personal collection, including an increasingly rare Steve Lewis (Skeech) bobble-head doll.

Tickets: $20 for reception and dinner, lecture/demonstration, and dance. Purchase your tickets at the door. If you only plan to attend the dance, tickets will be $10. Free parking available.

The Mark Kreitzer Band brings together five talented musicians who, combined, can play at least a dozen instruments and have backgrounds in nearly as many musical genre. Their take-no-prisoners bluegrass will get your feet tapping and hearts pounding. Playing at 9:00 p.m.

Patty and the Buttons preaches the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet, incorporating influences from New Orleans, gypsy jazz, western swing, and anything else you could hear on a 1920’s-40’s bandstand. This ensemble is firmly rooted in tradition but not shackled to history, its instrumentation moving from the light and swift to the melancholic and lush. Playing at 10:00 p.m.

The ’53 Swingbillies will keep you out on the dance floor, forgetting all about whatever weather awaits you outside. The musicians will look familiar - this group is the Mark Kreitzer Band’s plugged-in alter ego - but will have shifted from bluegrass to driving country-swing/rockabilly rhythms. Playing at 11:30 p.m.
