"The U.S. - Dakota War of 1862"

2012 marked the 150th anniversary of the 1862 U.S. - Dakota War in Minnesota as well as the second year of the U.S. Civil War (1861-65).  The Civil War was not going well for the North.  Antietam in September finally represented a "victory" for the Union but at a very bloody cost in terms of deaths and casualties.  Minnesota's conflict with the Dakota in September represented the failure of U.S. Indian policy, also at a very bloody cost.

Anne Jansen Aby ' 67 taught history and political science at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington for over 30 years.  She and Bob Aby ' 67 moved to Northfield in 2009.

Treat yourself to a tasty and inexpensive breakfast at Carleton Breakfast Club meetings.  Reservations are not necessary.  Suggestions for speakers are always welcome, and may be submitted to program coordinator Bob Carlson '68.
