Downtown Luncheon
Campus Censorship and the Decline of the Liberal Arts
with Professor Amna Khalid and Professor Jeff Snyder '97

Thursday, March 14, 2019
11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Fredrikson & Byron
200 S. 6th St., 40th Flr. Minneapolis
Hosted by Keith Libbey '59

Professors Khalid and Snyder will argue that threats to campus free expression are undermining the fundamental mission of liberal arts education: the development of critical thinking skills. From trigger warnings and Bias Response Teams to speech codes and shout-downs, the wave of campus censorship across the country is eroding the liberal arts ideal. When free expression is constrained, we become prisoners of our own perspectives, avoid controversial topics and—most importantly—lose our sense of curiosity.

Amna Khalid is Associate Professor of History and Director of Women's and Gender Studies. Jeff Snyder is Associate Professor of Educational Studies and Director of Africana Studies. They have co-authored articles that have appeared recently in The New Republic and Inside Higher Ed.

Cost: $10 per person (includes lunch)

Reserve you place by Monday, March 11 HERE if you would like to attend. We will stop accepting reservations once we have met room capacity. It will not be possible to accommodate walk-ins.
