the Bernardo Winery

Nestled inside the quaint town of Rancho Bernardo lies one of the best-kept secrets of San Diego: the Bernardo Winery. One step in the gates and you are transported six thousand miles away and one hundred years into the past to a place south of Sicily: a courtyard with beautiful Mediterranean gardens, lush vineyards, and a quiet homely atmosphere. The 116-year-old winery is still fully functional and contains shops, a coffee shop, and a café.

We will begin with a tour of the winery and end with a wine tasting. Afterward we will adjourn to the nearby home of Wendy Wallen ’60 for coffee and refreshments.

Please meet in front of the tasting room at 12:45 p.m. The tour will begin at 1:00. The tour and tasting will last approximately one hour. The winery provides plenty of parking with handicap accessibility.

Tour: $1.75 per person (guests under 21 free of charge)

Wine tasting: choice of 3 wines $4.50

Directions to the Bernardo Winery at 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte, San Diego CA92128:

From San Diego: North on 163 and I-15. Take the Rancho Bernardo Road turnoff east to Pomerado Road, then north (left) on Pomerado Road to Paseo Del Verano. Turn right on Paseo Del Verano to winery (1.5 miles).

From coastal cities or Escondido: Take I-15 south over Lake Hodges bridge to Rancho Bernardo Road, then east to Pomerado Road, then north (left) on Pomerado Road to Paseo del Verano (the first stoplight). Turn right on Paseo del Verano to Winery, 1.5 miles.

Directions to Wendy Wallen’s home will be passed out after the tour.
