2006 MIAC Men's Tennis Championships

Owatonna and Rochester, Minn. -- Gustavus Adolphus College, ranked first in the nation
in the latest Fila/ITA Division III top 25, beat Carleton College 9-0 to claim its 41st
overall conference title at the Rochester Athletic Club.

The Gusties (31-4) won their 19th consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men's tennis title, dating back to the 1989 season. The Knights (21-4) lost to the Gusties in the title match for the third straight season but set a new school record for most wins in a season by besting Concordia-Moorhead, 6-2, in the semifinals.

The sixth-seeded Cobbers were the surprise of the tournament, upsetting third-seeded Hamline in the quarterfinals and edging fifth-seeded St. John's, 5-4, for third place. Hamline rebounded to beat St. Mary's, 5-3, for the consolation bracket title.

Day 1 Recap

Owatonna and Rochester, Minn. -- Top seed and 17-time defending MIAC champion Gustavus Adolphus College and second seed and tournament host Carleton College both advanced to the semifinals after the first day of the MIAC Men's Tennis Tournament.

The Gusties (29-4), currently ranked first in the Fila/ITA Division III top 25, disposed of eighth-seeded St. Mary's, 5-1. The Knights (20-3) matched their school record for wins in a season by sweeping past rival St. Olaf, 9-0. The Gusties face fifth-seeded St. John's in one semifinal, while Carleton takes on sixth seed Concordia, which upset third-seeded Hamline, 6-3.

The tournament, forced indoors at the Rochester Athletic Club and Owatonna Tennis Center by rain showers, concludes tomorrow with the semifinals at the Rochester Athletic Club with Carleton-Concordia at 11 a.m., with Gustavus and St. John's starting at 12:30 p.m. The semifinal winners meet at 4 o'clock in Rochester for the MIAC men's tennis title. The consolation bracket play commences in Owatonna at 12 noon with Hamline and St. Olaf, with the fifth-place match at 4 p.m.
