The Carleton Team

The “core team” for this project consists of faculty, staff, and administrators at Carleton who have participated in Carnegie’s Integrative Learning Project (ILP) and the latest Carnegie Scholars cohort (2005-06) on Integrative Learning. We also include here a talented “supporting cast” of others who offer leadership experience tied to the campus initiatives noted above.

Core Team Members As of September 2006; Updated December 2008:

Scott Bierman, Dean of the College, Professor of Economics, Carnegie ILP team member, has been involved in guiding the faculty through creation of a number of initiatives including an accelerated sabbatical policy, the passage of a Cross-Cultural Studies concentration, and the introduction of a writing portfolio pilot program (now a requirement for all students). More recently, he has been an active participant in curricular initiatives that include “Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge,” “Building the Consciously Creative Campus” with the arts, “Visual Culture,” and the “Carleton Interdisciplinary Science and Math Initiative.”

Elizabeth Ciner, Associate Dean of the College, Senior Lecturer in English, Carnegie ILP team member, for the past fifteen years has provided oversight for the off-campus and international studies office, the Registrar’s Office, academic advising, and the college writing program. As a standing member of both the Education and Curriculum Committee and the Academic Standing Committee, she is deeply involved in the assessment of academic programs and of students’ academic progress.

Tricia Ferrett, Professor of Chemistry, former Director of the Carleton Interdisciplinary Science and Math Initiative 2003-2007, CASTL Carnegie Scholar 2005-06, co-leader and module co-author in the NSF-funded ChemLinks Coalition that authored ChemConnections modules with the Modular Chemistry Consortium based at University of California, Berkeley (modules now published by W.W. Norton). This project included a $1 million assessment effort. Ferrett currently oversees evaluation and assessment of all programs funded by Carleton’s fifth HHMI grant.

Carol Rutz, Director of the Writing Program, Senior Lecturer in English, Carnegie ILP team member, brings to the project extensive experience with faculty development and assessment of student learning in the college’s Writing Program and in the Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning and Knowledge Initiative. Rutz is a key participant in new and emerging college initiatives, particularly as they use and apply “lessons learned” from assessment of student writing.

Mary Savina, President of the Carleton faculty, Charles L. Denison Professor of Geology, Director of Archaeology, Carnegie ILP team member, has extensive experience in environmental studies, teacher preparation, and assessment of student learning. She is involved in a wide range of faculty development events, workshops, and projects tied into multiple campus initiatives.

Jackie Lauer-Glebov, through June 2008, Assistant Director of Institutional Research and Director of Assessment, Carnegie ILP team member, oversees institutional research and assessment for many college programs, grant-funded curriculum development, and college surveys. She works with faculty to design course-embedded assessments of student learning. She receives support from Dana Buddenbaum, Research and Assessment Analyst.
