Winter Break: Dream and Reality: Turn of the Century Vienna

Academic Program

This winter-break program is part of two linked 6-credit courses offered in Fall, Winter Break, and Winter Term: German 345 (on campus), and German 346 (ten days to two weeks in Vienna , and on campus during Winter term). Both courses are required to participate in the program. In the preparatory course we will read about and discuss various aspects of turn-of-the-century Vienna:

• architecture

• literature

• music

• politics

• psychology

Some background reading will be in English, but primary texts will be read and discussed in German.

We will spend our time in Vienna visiting many of the sites we studied in the fall and absorbing as much Viennese cultural life as possible. During this time each student will use the resources of the city to work on a longer project they will have proposed in the fall course.

The winter-term part of the seminar meets once early in the term, and then involves individual meetings with Professor Ulmer to work on individual projects. Drafts are due at mid-term break. The course will meet regularly in the second half of winter term, when each student will formally present his or her project to the rest of the group.

Housing

Shared rooms (doubles, triples) in Pension Lehrerhof, near the museum district and the Inner City.

Costs

You are responsible for the flight to Vienna, and partial board (and pocket money). All other expenses (local transportation, tickets to productions we see as a group, tours) are covered. The program will pay for one meal during the day (probably the noon meal). At least one of these meals will be at the nearby Schnitzelwirt, which has fabulous (and relatively inexpensive) Wiener Schnitzel – not to be missed!
