Globetrotting investigative journalist Kelsey Timmerman presents convocation

February 13, 2015

Globetrotting investigative journalist Kelsey Timmerman will present the weekly Carleton College convocation on Friday, Feb. 20 from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. Fueled by passion and curiosity, Timmerman tells the story of the items in our lives that we often take for granted. His presentation, entitled “Where Am I Wearing? Where Am I Eating?,” shares the stories of the people he meets as he travels the world, educating audiences and promoting dialogue about how to improve our world economy.

This event is free and open to the public. Carleton convocations are recorded and archived online at go.carleton.edu/convo/.

As an investigative journalist, Timmerman has trekked the planet and put a human face on the global economy. With a desire to know where his clothes came from and who made them, he began an adventure that would take him from Honduras to Bangladesh to Cambodia to China and back again. The result was his first book, Where Am I Wearing: A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories, and People That Make Our Clothes. This was followed up by a global quest to meet the farmers and fishermen who grow and catch our food, which Timmerman documented in his latest book, Where Am I Eating?: An Adventure Through the Global Food Economy.

Timmerman’s writings have appeared in the Christian Science Monitor and Condé Nast Portfolio and have aired on NPR. Timmerman is also the cofounder of the Facing Project, which seeks to connect people through stories to strengthen community. He has spent the night in Castle Dracula in Romania, played PlayStation in Kosovo, farmed on four continents, taught an island village to play baseball in Honduras, and in another life, worked as a SCUBA instructor in Key West, Florida. Whether in print or in person he seeks to connect people around the world. More at www.whereamiwearing.com.
