Shigeo Yamada ’89 provides a Japanese Diplomat’s View of Japan-US Relations

Esteemed Japanese diplomat Shigeo Yamada, a member of the Carleton Class of 1989, will present an insider’s view of current Japanese-US relations in an appearance on Thursday, May 14 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Gould Library Athenaeum.

Yamada serves as Political Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. His areas of responsibility include overall Japan-US relations, alliance management, and regional issues. He assumed his current post in October 2002, after serving in Beijing for three years as the Cultural Affairs Minister at the Embassy of Japan in China.

From 2006 to 2009, Yamada was the Director of Northeast Asia Division covering Japan’s relationship with the Korean Peninsula. During that time, he participated in a series of Six-Party Talks on North Korea’s nuclear issue as Japan’s deputy head of delegation. He also served as Director of Status of US Forces Agreement Division from 2002 to 2004.

A native of Japan, Yamada earned a BA in law from Keio University in 1987 and a BA in political science from Carleton College in 1989.
