Best-selling Novelist Jane Hamilton to Speak

Well-known novelist Jane Hamilton will speak at Carleton College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 27 in room 149 Olin Hall as part of the Northfield Reads! Book Club. The event is free and open to the public.

Hamilton, author of the PEN/Hemingway Award-winning “The Book of Ruth” (1988) and the New York Times Notable Book “A Map of the World” (1994), will be discussing her latest book, “When Madeline Was Young” (Doubleday). Her newest novel is the story of a couple who raise a family while lovingly caring for the husband’s brain-damaged first wife.

Hamilton is a member of the Carleton College class of 1979. She lives with her family on an apple farm in southern Wisconsin.

Northfield Reads! is a cooperative community reading program sponsored by the Carleton Bookstore, River City Books, the St. Olaf Bookstore, Monkey See Monkey Read, and the Northfield Public Library.

“When Madeline Was Young” can be purchased at the above local bookstores, where it will be discounted 20 percent through September 27. All of Hamilton’s books will be available for purchase following the discussion; she also will sign books.
