Holocaust Scholar to Speak at Carleton College's Forkosh Family Lectureship

Northfield, Minn.—Dr. Michael Berenbaum, a nationally renowned scholar on the Holocaust, will present "The Uniqueness and Universality of the Holocaust" on Monday, April 14, at 8 p.m. in Carleton College's Great Hall.

Berenbaum, who directed the Research Institute of the U.S. Holocaust Museum from 1993-97, has had a distinguished career as a scholar, curator, filmmaker and consultant. He is currently the director of the Sigi Ziering Institute on the Ethical and Religious Implications of the Holocaust at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, as well as the president of a consulting firm specializing in museum development and documentary films.

Berenbaum is the author of The Vision of the Void: Theological Reflections on the Works of Elie Wiesel, After Tragedy and Triumph: Modern Jewish Thought and the American Experience, The World Must Know: The History of the Holocaust, A Promise to Remember: The Holocaust in the Words and Voices of its Survivors, and Martyrdom: The Psychology, Politics and Theology of An Idea. He has also co-edited several volumes of essays, including Holocaust: Religious and Philosophical Implications, Anatomy of the Auschwitz Death Camp, The Holocaust and History: The Known, The Unknown, The Disputed and the Re-examined, and After the Passion Is Gone: American Religious Consequences, among others.

Berenbaum has been a consultant or director on numerous documentaries, including One Survivor Remembers (which won an Emmy award in 1995) and The Last Days (which won an Academy Award in 1998). He is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, and has lectured widely at universities throughout the country.

The Forkosh Family Lectureship in Judaic Studies, established in 1983 by Dr. David S. Forkosh '55, sponsors his appearance. The lectureship brings to Carleton an outstanding scholar in some field of Judaic Studies each year. Berenbaum's lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
