January 5th, 2011 (Winter Tem)

March 20, 2011 at 5:54 pm

We had a great turnout for tonight's meeting, so thanks everyone for coming! Here's what we talked about:

  1. Ray and Robert are back! - Our VP and Treasurer came back from studying abroad in Spain and Denmark!
  2. MLK Day - The Martin Luther King, Jr. chapel service will be Sunday the 16th at 5:00, and Reverend Oliver White will be coming down from the cities to preach. There will be opportunities to read scripture (and sing with the Jubilee Singers! See #8 below) and it will definitely be a great service, so be sure to attend. On Monday the 17th there will be a dinner - there was a blurb about this in the all-campus e-mail; e-mail Kristen Askeland at the OIIL office to RSVP.
  3. Black History Month Service - This will be held in the chapel on February 27th and Reverend Denise Dunbar Perkins (from the cities as well) will be preaching. We're supposed to think of a theme for the service that she can tailor her sermon to, so e-mail your suggestions to the board. Some ideas might be perserverance, struggle...
  4. T-Shirts - Will be dark purple with charcoal grey writing. Ideas for a quote, design, and theme are due by the 3rd week meeting. We want to make them look really cool and earn some money by selling them to anyone on campus, so get creative!
  5. Black History Month Ideas - We're trying to promote Black History Month all throughout February, not just at the end when we have Spirit Week and We Speak, so let us know if you have any ideas. Some possibilties include an art exhibition at Freedom House, a fashion show, and playing music by black artists in Sayles during common time.
  6. White Privilege Conference - Will be in the cities from April 13th-16th, so we need to do fundraising THIS term. We're hoping to take at least 10 people, but the more money we make, the more people we can take! We'll definitely have some crepe sales, and feel free to let us know if you have any other brilliant fundraising ideas.
  7. We Speak - Will be held on Friday, Feb. 25th. This is our annual performance that features students reading poetry, singing, acting, dancing, or in any way using their talent and creativity to promote African American culture and Black History Month. Start preparing your act, and be original!
  8. Jubilee Singers - Will start meeting this Friday; look for an e-mail from Robin with more details. You can earn academic credit for attending all practices and performances (including the MLK Day service and We Speak) and you don't have to be a fantastic singer, so get excited!
  9. Discussion - We talked about how our religious beliefs may have changed or not since coming to Carleton. Next week we'll be talking about the intersection of the LGBTQ and black communities, so it'll be another great discussion. As always, let us know if you have ideas for future topics.

See everyone next week; stay warm!
