Knights Finish 16th at U.S. Collegiate Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The 2009 synchronized swimming season drew to a close this weekend at the U.S. Collegiate Championships. The Knights were 16th out of 23 teams, ranking ahead of squads from institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University.

The event—held at at the Josh Davis Natatorium—marks the 33rd national championships, which are an open-class meet, combining competition from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III and NAIA colleges and universities.

Ohio State University tallied 98.0 points to win its 25th synchro championship. Defending champion Stanford University was second at 80.0 points followed by Canisius College, which scored 76.5 points to earn third place.

On Thursday, the opening day of action, Charlotte Alster (Fy./Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) was Carleton’s lone entrant in the solo competition. She finished 19th of 38 athletes during the semifinals with a score of 73.833. The top 12 advance to Saturday’s finals.

The Knights’ top performers at the duet competition, Dara Strauss-Albee (Sr./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Stephanie Moberg (Jr./Scottsdale, Ariz./North Canyon) tied for 21st after recording a score of 71.500.

The final event on day one say Alster, Moberg and Strauss-Albee join efforts for an 18th-place showing out of 34 performances in the trio competition.

Friday’s action featured the A, B, C, and D technical competitions as well as the team semifinal, where the quartet of Knights—Alster, Strauss-Albee, Moberg and Liza Styles (Sr./Amherst, Mass./Pioneer Valley Performing Arts)—finished 20th with a score of 70.500.

All four team members that traveled to the national championships took part in the “Figures” portion of the competition.

Styles had the top Carleton placement in this segment of the competition at the championships as she finished 13th after scoring 55.486 points in “D” figures. Strauss-Albee took part in the C Figures and tallied 60.330 points, good for 32nd out of 49 entrants. In the B Figures competition, Alster was 45th and Moberg 50th, recording 62.653 and 61.683 points respectively.

The Knights did not have any competitors in action on Saturday.
