Ten Pieces of Mostly Earnest Advice for Freshmen
February 17, 2009 at 1:35 pmIn my time here at Carleton, I’ve picked up many valuable pieces of advice from others, some not-so-valuable pieces of advice, and above all have forged through the trenches to come up with a few nuggets of wisdom of my own. Amazingly, I’ve been working with the Web Services Group for four years, long enough to remember the inception of this here blog back in the winter of ’05, when Tim Blaha '06 published his piece “Ten Things I Wish I Had Known as a Freshman.” With my time at this institution drawing to a close, here’s my take on the ten things I wish I had known as a freshman.

Well, now that the leaves have all been blasted off the trees and lie browning at our feet, I'm already feeling a little nostalgic for autumn. So, to ease the passing of the autumn-that-is-no-more in our hearts, I've compiled some photos from my off-campus study in Japan that capture the essence of the season.
Off-Campus Photo Contest Finalists Debut in Library Exhibit
April 20, 2006 at 11:43 amThe 20th annual Off Campus Studies Photography Exhibit will open Monday, April 24 and run through August 15 at the Carleton College Gould Library. The exhibit will feature the finalists from the annual photography contest held by the Office of Off Campus Studies.
The 20-year-old contest is open to Carleton students who have participated in an off-campus studies program. This year the contest attracted 130 submissions from 50 students, who had traveled to places such as Mali, Bolivia, Russia and Sri Lanka. The judges, associate professor of geology Cameron Davidson, reference librarian Kristin Partlo, and studio arts senior Stephen Harris (Roseville, Minn.) have chosen 25 finalists.
The judges will award prizes in the categories people, place, and narrative quality. Also, a new category is being added this year—people’s choice. Through April 21, Carleton students, staff, and faculty members can vote for their favorite photo.

Messages from Mali
February 2, 2006 at 10:59 amJunior Nathan Kennedy '07 is spending winter term 2006 on an off-campus French studies seminar program in Mali offered through Carleton and led by French professor Cherif Keita, a native of that country. Those of us he left behind in Minnesota's ice and snow can follow his academic and cultural adventures in his blog, Messages from Mali. A recent excerpt:
"Bamako, the capital of Mali . . . seems to represent the intersection of two worlds—the traditional Malian on the one hand, and the occidental influence on the other. In many respects this is a modern Western city. Cars and small motorbikes have taken over the major roads, internet cafés are popular, and stores sell a wide range of Western products. Yet most streets remain unpaved and walking around the city you see chickens, donkeys and even cattle alongside Coca-Cola and instant coffee."
