Halloween at Carleton

November 2, 2006 at 3:05 pm

This year, Halloween at Carleton fell on a Tuesday, right in the middle of the school week. This didn't prevent the campus from celebrating in true Carl style, however, with a whole lineup of events from the Friday before to the actual night of Halloween.

Friday:

  • Pumpkin carving outside Burton Hall. Students could carve pumpkins into any shape they wished while enjoying toasted pumpkin seeds and hot chocolate.
  • Masquerade ball at the Sayles-Hill. Students dressed up as butterflies, vampires, and woodland spirits could show off their new ballroom dancing skills here, mostly learned from Social Dance Club. Swing, tango, waltz and cha-cha.

Saturday:

  • Game night at Sci-Fi house. Zombies (a board game), lots of candy, and in-character Apples to Apples (you must play the way the figure you are dressed up as would play). There was also a showing of the immortal classic, Young Frankenstein.
  • Harvest Fest at Farm House. Food, activities, and a Shaker revival.
  • A celebration of Samhain by the Carleton Druids. Despite her intrepid venturing into the dark, creepy Upper Arb at night, our reporter could not locate them.

Sunday:

  • Musser Hall trick-or-treat.
  • 8th annual Halloween Knight.

Tuesday (Halloween):

  • Special Halloween dinner. It was not actually necessary for Sodexho to change anything (just kidding!). The lights were dimmed, a few plastic hands got slipped into the vegan bar, and the spaghetti was called "blood sauce on worms."
  • Trick-or-treat for canned goods. Through ACT, some students went into the Northfield neighborhood to ask residents for donations to the Northfield Food Shelf. The winning team collected an average of 49 cans per person!
  • Haunted Nourse. Nourse Hall led guided tours through a special creepied-up section of the dorm.
  • Photo booth at the LDC. At no charge, any student could get a photo printed out of his Halloween costume with friends.
  • Halloween concert and costume contest. The winners, a group of Tetris blocks, doffed their costumes and streaked out of the chapel. Also, Schiller made an appearance. With four getaway cars and a decoy Schiller departing on foot, Schiller was not rescued from his current owners.

If you haven't had your fill of Halloween yet, try the pumpkin-carving game that arrived in your all-campus email:
