An ongoing series of films at Carleton College’s Weitz Center for Creativity is showcasing the best of contemporary cinema from around the world. The Global Cinema series, presented by the College’s Department of Cinema and Media Studies and curated by assistant professor Jay Beck, is presented Wednesday evenings during the winter term in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema. All screenings begin at 7 p.m., and all are free and open to the public.

The next film scheduled in the series is the American film "Jurassic Park" (1993), being screened on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this classic film is based on the novel by Michael Crichton and describes the re-creation of dinosaurs for the ultimate theme park. Wonder turns to terror as the dinosaurs begin to break free of their enclosures and attack visitors.

Future films in the series include:

February 29: “Lone Star” (USA, 1996). Directed by John Sayles. In a small town in Texas, the skeleton of the former sheriff is unearthed. In his investigation of his predecessor’s murder, the new sheriff stumbles into a complicated mystery.

March 7: “Monsoon Wedding” (India, 2001). Directed by Mira Nair. Set in modern-day India, the film follows the Verma family as they prepare for their daughter’s arranged wedding. As relatives arrive from around the world, the father’s rejection of modernity and the daughter’s secret affair cause tensions in the family.
