Feminist media critic and blogger Anita Sarkeesian will present the weekly Carleton College convocation address on Friday, Jan. 18 from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. A renowned popular culture critic and creator of the video blog, “Feminist Frequency,” Sarkeesian will explore the representation of women in pop culture narratives, including television, movies and gaming. Her presentation, entitled, “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You: Redefining Strong Female Characters,” is free and open to the public.
“Feminist Frequency” is a video webseries that takes a critical look at depictions of women in popular culture narratives. Sarkeesian’s work focuses on deconstructing the stereotypes and tropes associated with women in popular culture as well as highlighting issues surrounding the targeted harassment of women in online and gaming spaces. Sarkeesian’s video series “Tropes vs. Women,” created in collaboration with Bitch magazine, which pays particular attention to science fiction and video games. “Feminist Frequency” can be found online at www.feministfrequency.com.
Sarkeesian lectures and presents at universities, conferences and game development studios worldwide. She has been featured in Forbes, Wired, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail and . Her videos are viewable for free via the “Feminist Frequency” YouTube channel and are used nationwide as educational tools in high school and university classrooms.
