The Muppets is a 2011 American musical comedy film, the first Muppets theatrical release in 12 years.
In the film, Walter (performed by Peter Linz), the world's biggest Muppet fan, and his brother Gary, (Jason Segel) and brother's girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) must raise $10 million to save the Muppet Theater from Tex Richman (Chris Cooper), a businessman who plans to demolish the studio to drill for oil.
The Muppets is directed by James Bobin, written by Segel and Nicholas Stoller, produced by Segel, Martin Baker, David Furnish, David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman, and John Scotti, and features Bret McKenzie as the music supervisor.
The film is distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and was released in North America on November 23, 2011, to broad critical acclaim and commercial success. It was released in the United Kingdom on February 10, 2012. The Muppets was first announced in March 2008 and production started in September 2010. The film premiered at the 2011 Savannah Film Festival. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Man or Muppet" written by Bret McKenzie.
It is the highest-grossing Muppet film to date, followed by The Muppet Movie, the most acclaimed installment in the series, and the only Muppet film to win an Academy Award ("Man or Muppet" for Best Original Song).
