WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Carleton College men’s soccer team suffered a non-conference setback on Monday, falling on the road at regionally-ranked Wartburg College. The 5-0 loss snapped Carleton’s four-match unbeaten streak and dropped the Knights’ overall record to 7-4-3.
The hosts’ offensive onslaught put Carleton at an early disadvantage, as Wartburg (10-5-1) scored three times in a six-minute span starting with Jay Tegge’s goal in the 12th minute, a score that also put an end to Carleton’s streak of 399 minutes without conceding a goal. Carleton does still own an active streak of 297 consecutive minutes without allowing a score by a MIAC opponent.
Carleton captain Riley Phelps (Sr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) sent three shots towards goal, and Danny Leal (Sr./Rice Lake, Wis/Rice Lake) and Alex Griese (Sr./Melbourne, Fla./Hun School of Princeton) each registered two shots on target. Wartburg’s Paul Koebke Barsic and Gunnar Lenzen combined for the shutout in goal.
Brandon Hilliard (Jr./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) came up with five saves in the first half, and Aidan Mullan (Jr./Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) saved two in the second stanza.
Carleton returns home this Saturday, October 22, for a vital conference matchup against rival St. Olaf College at 3:30 pm. Live video and stats will be available via Knights Online. The day will begin with the alumni match played at 10:30 a.m. on the Bell Field practice area.
