NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Thanks to a trio of second-half goals, the Carleton College men’s soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon.

In a brief reprieve from MIAC play, Carleton (6-3-0, 1-2-0 MIAC) came out firing on all cylinders but couldn’t find the back of the net despite 11 shots in the first half.

The Knights finally got on the board in the 53rd minute, when Trevor Freeland (Jr./Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) collected a perfectly placed through ball from William Lanzillo (Jr./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and touched it around goalie Turner Main for the 1-0 lead.

It took less than four minutes for the home side to strike again. This time it was first-year Alvin Bierley (Santa Cruz, Calif./Leland) on the receiving end of an Andy Younkins (So./Beaverton, Ore./Westview) chip, winding his way into the box before finishing from close range.

Carleton peppered the Northwestern (4-2-2, 3-1-1 UMAC) goal with 22 shots on the day, but the visitors could do little against the Knights’ staunch back line. Outside backs Mark Roth (Jr./Evanston,Ill./Evanston Township) and Jack Lightbody (Sr./Etna, N.H./Hanover) shut down the Eagle attack all game, helping Carleton backstop Aiden Mullen (Sr./Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) secure his second shutout.

The Knights took 19 corner kicks on the day, but it was a long throw from Freeland that set up the final goal. Nicolas Graese (Jr./Verona Wis./Verona) rounded out the scoring in the 80th minute, pounding the bouncing ball home to make it 3-0.

Freeland leads the Knights with five goals and four game-winning goals on the year, while Lanzillo’s four assists are also a team best. Both of Bierley’s tallies this year have come off assists from Younkins.

The Knights will host Concordia College this Saturday, Sept. 30 in a crucial mid-season conference clash. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm at Bell Field, and Knights Online is slated to provide live stats and live video.
