NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Marco da Cunha (Fy./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) scored with five seconds remaining in overtime to lift Carleton College men’s soccer to a 1-0 victory over University of Minnesota-Morris in the season opener for both sides.
Making his collegiate debut, da Cunha made the most of his first scoring chance. He collected the ball at the top of the box, worked around a defender, and directed a low-angle shot from the right wing inside the far post. The Knights have now won seven of their last eight season lid-lifters.
Another rookie, Charlie Hall (Fy./LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township), nearly gave the Knights a lead early in the match as his 13th-minute header clanged off the left post. Minnesota-Morris goalkeeper Jake Peterson stopped seven other shots before da Cunha tallied the game winner.
Aaron Forman (So./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) made his first career start in goal for Carleton and posted the shutout.
The Knights hit the road to face Grinnell College at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.
