NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomores Tarek Bos-Shadi (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Alvin Bierley (Santa Cruz, Calif./Leland) found the back of the net for their first goals of the season as the Carleton College men’s soccer team bested North Central College, 2-1.
This was the third straight one-goal victory for the Knights (3-0-0) to open the 2018 campaign.
“I’m impressed with the guys,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “Good effort, and I’m really pleased with how the guys have responded to what we asked them to do.”
After a corner kick In the 16th minute, Henry Koelling’s (Fy./Ann Arbor, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) one-timer of a bouncing ball was rejected by North Central goal keeper Marco Soto. The ball popped right to Bos-Shadi, who one-touched his shot inside the right post to notch his first career goal.
Less than two minutes later, the Cardinals found the equalizer on the counterattack, and the match headed into intermission knotted at 1-1 despite the Knights’ 16-2 advantage in shot attempts.
The 60th minute saw the tie broken. William Lanzillo (Sr./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) chased down a pass rolling toward the end line, touched around a defender. and directed his pass to Bierley, who was unmarked at the far post for the easy tap-in.
Both defenses held firm over the remainder of the match as the team combined on only three shots over the final 30 minutes of action.
Carleton opens the MIAC schedule with a match at Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.
