ST. PAUL, Minn. – Simon Ginet (Jr./Arlington, Mass./Arlington) scored twice—including the game winner—to propel the No. 18-ranked Carleton College men’s soccer team to a 4-0 road victory at Hamline University. Branden McGarrity (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) broke a 25-year-old team record as the Knights’ unbeaten streak reached nine games, during which Carleton (12-1-1, 5-1-1 MIAC) has out-scored the opposition by a 26-6 margin.
Today’s victory was Carleton’s 12th of the season, matching the fourth-highest figure in program history, matching last year’s total and trailing only the school-record 17 wins in 2008, 15 in 2009, and 14 in 2007. Over the last six seasons the Knights are 43-8-6 (.807) in conference games.
The day’s first goal came in the 12th minute. Brian Rhodes (Sr./Kalamazoo, Mich./Mattawan) served a driven ball from the left wing that McGarrity rose to flick to Ginet on the right side. The junior forward smashed a 16-yard shot into the left side of the goal.
McGarrity’s assist was his third of the season—in addition to his team-record tying 15 goals—and gives him 33 points on the year, breaking Carleton’s single-season mark. The previous high was 32 points by George Monyemangene in 1987 as he notched 13 goals and 6 assists.
Fifteen minutes after scoring the first time, the Knights struck again. A 40-yard free kick toward the back post landed amongst a horde of players. Center back Devin Tomson-Moylan (So./St. Paul, Minn./Central) poked the ball home in the midst of the melee, and fellow defender Neil Bartholomay (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) was credited with an assist.
Midway through the second half, Alex Voorhees (Sr./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) picked off a pass in the midfield and fed McGarrity out wide on the right where the rookie delivered a great service into the box. Will Corcoran’s (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) diving header was turned aside by a Piper defender, but Ginet collected the deflection and smashed a half-volley inside the near post for his eighth goal of the campaign, fourth among all MIAC players.
In the 72nd minute Carleton notched its final goal. Nathan Park (So./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) beat a couple defenders on the dribble in the box before being taken down by another Piper for a penalty kick, which Voorhees converted for his third goal of the year.
After missing three-plus games due to injury, goalkeeper James Neher (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) returned to the lineup and notched a pair saves in recording a clean sheet.
Today’s triumph, coupled with a St. Thomas tie against Saint John’s, means the Knights now control their own destiny in pursuit of a third straight conference crown. Carleton has three conference contests remaining—all at home—against Bethel, St. Thomas, and rival St. Olaf. First, however, Carleton will travel to Northwestern College for a non-conference affair on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
