WINONA, Minn. – After the Knights surrendered an early goal, Simon Ginet (Jr./Arlington, Mass./Arlington) tallied the equalizer midway through the first half then assisted on a pair of second-half scores as the No. 18 Carleton College men’s soccer team posted a 3-1 victory at Saint Mary’s University. The final goal of the contest was tallied by Branden McGarrity (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), who matched the Carleton record for goals in a season with his 15th score.
The Cardinals (6-7, 3-4 MIAC) had won three straight and were looking for an upset as Joe Bosco scored in the third minute. But that would be the lone shot to sneak past Carleton goalkeeper Keenan Smith (So./Madison, Wis./West), who turned aside seven more attempts throughout the contest.
Carleton knotted the score in the 21st minute. Ben Walsh (Jr./New Canaan, Conn./St. Paul’s School) served a cross to the back post and Ginet headed it home for his sixth goal of the season.
In the 55th minute, Ginet sprung Will Corcoran (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) up the left side, and the junior finished with his right foot to notch the game winner.
With less than 90 seconds remaining in the contest, McGarrity tallied his 15th goal of the campaign, tying Ron Sanders school record established 49 years ago during the first season of varsity soccer at Carleton (SEE CHART BELOW). Ginet played the ball to McGarrity, creating a one-on-one opportunity against the Cardinal keeper. The MIAC’s leading goal scorer juked the goalie out of position and tapped the ball into the net.
McGarrity’s goal total is the second-highest by a MIAC player over the last 10 seasons, ranking behind on Riley McGlynn’s 16-goal performance for Concordia in 2010. (SEE CHART BELOW)
Carleton travels to Hamline University on Saturday, Oct. 13 for a 1 p.m. contest before closing the regular season with a trio of home matches.
