ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s soccer continued its hot start to the season by knocking the University of Northwestern-St. Paul, 4-0. Forwards Marco da Cunha (Fy./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) and Trevor Freeland (Sr./DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) led the way, each scoring a brace for the Knights.

By besting another non-conference foe, the Knights improved their season record to 8-1-1, their best ledger through a season’s first 10 games since opening the 2012 campaign with a 9-1-0 record. Overall the Knights are experiencing an offensive explosion, as this was the third time in the last six matches in which Carleton scored four or more goals.

The Knights wasted little time getting the scoring started, when in the 11th minute da Cunha intercepted an Eagles’ goal kick and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 advantage.

In the 30th minute, the Knights’ notched their second goal, when a beautiful through pass from Charlie Hall (Fy./LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) found the feet of Freeland unmarked in the box, and Freeland slid the ball around the goalie into the side netting.

Carleton got off to a quick start again in the second half, when in the 50th minute da Cunha made a run from 40 yards out, beating multiple Northwestern defenders before blasting his second goal just underneath the bar. A mere nine minutes later Freeland hammered in his second goal of the evening when Mark Roth (Sr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) led him with a pass which he chipped in over the keeper.

For both Freeland and da Cunha, this was their first career multi-goal efforts.

In net Aaron Forman (So./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) had an impeccable performance, earning his third shutout of the season.

Carleton returns to conference action and hosts University of St. Thomas on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. This will be the second half of a Homecoming doubleheader, with the women’s teams getting things started at 1 p.m. Knights Online will feature live video and stats for both contests.
