Center for Community and Civic Engagement

The Volunteer Interpreter Service (VIS) is intended to make it easier for local non-English speakers to access health, legal, educational, employment and social services. A typical job might be interpreting for school parent/teacher conferences or translating a brochure about the Food Shelf. Good language comprehension and usage is necessary (Spanish is the most requested language).

In addition to one time interpreting events, VIS offers students the opportunity to volunteer at the LINK Center, a community resource center run by Growing Up Healthy, in partnership with the City of Northfield. The LINK Center connects Northfield community members with resources in Northfield and across Rice County, including health, legal, food, housing, Adult Basic Education, and city/county services. During times when the Center is staffed, anyone may come to the LINK Center and ask questions about local resources and services. Spanish language skills are required to volunteer at the LINK Center.
