Atmospheric Aerosol Particles:  Impacts on Climate and Human Health

Particulate matter in the atmosphere consists of solids or liquid droplets in the micrometer or nanometer size range, suspended in the air, otherwise known as aerosol particles.  Each breath we take contains tens- to hundreds-of-thousands of aerosol particles.  These particles have a profound detrimental impact on our health and provide the largest degree of uncertainty in our understanding of the global climate system.  In this presentation, I will review the sources and atmospheric processes that lead to the formation and transformation of aerosol particles in the atmosphere in the context of projects and studies undertaken in my lab and in Carleton courses, including analysis of particles in the US and China.

Periodic Table Meets This Week

Periodic Table meets this Thursday in the LDC.  We meet at noon in the chemistry hallway and walk over together, or you can join us there.  If you are off board, the department will cover your lunch.  Note:  We do not have one of the dining rooms reserved this week.

Teaching Experiences for Undergraduates

Summer Science Teaching Experiences for Undergraduates (TEU) offers participants an immersive summer experience in secondary science education at Trinity College.  Selected from a national network of 61 liberal arts institutions, TEU participants earn a generous stipend, take a 60-hour course in science teaching methods, and apply what they’re learning to teaching high school students under the supervision of a master teacher.  Funded by the National Science Foundation, TEU aims to develop future educational leaders.  If you are committed to a career in secondary education or seriously interested in exploring the possibility of such a career, apply now.  For more information, visit http://teu.vassar.edu/.  Application deadline:  February 28, 2016.
