The Places Less Visited on a Road Well Travelled
February 25, 2008Our last weekend in Istanbul we were graced with the arrival of Louis Fishman, a former Carleton professor of Middle Eastern History. He also spent several years in Turkey doing research for his PhD and has many friends and colleagues in Turkey. He gave a four day seminar entitled the "Beneath the Surface: the Other Istanbul." Many thanks to my mom and Jenny Morse's mom, Cynthia, for getting on my case to publish this to the blog. This article was also published in last week's Carletonian.

January 3, 2008After months of anticipation, today marks the first day of Middle East Mosaics 2008! Nearly all of the 32 students will meet today at JFK airport in New York to depart on the adventure of a lifetime. In Paris Mahima will join up with the group to make it complete.
The first leg of our journey brings us to Egypt at 7pm tomorrow, just in time to acquire visas, settle into the student residences on Zamalek island in Cairo. There we will be attending classes at the American University in Cairo, exploring the ancient streets of Coptic Cairo, visiting the famed pyramids of Giza, traveling north to Alexandria, and taking a train alongside the Nile to beautiful Luxor.
