September 13, 2006

Renowned printmaker and engraver Oscar J. Gillespie will discuss his work on Friday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Boliou Hall, Room 104. The event is free and open to the public.

Gillespie, associate professor of art at Bradley University, is noted for his expertise in monotypes and intaglio. He is particularly renowned for his metal-plate engraving, a traditional print technique no longer commonly used. Gillespie’s work is often inspired by nature and the landscape of northern Arizona.

Gillespie received his MFA from Arizona State University and his BFA from Northern Arizona University where he has received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997. Both degrees are in printmaking. Additionally, Gillespie has done post-graduate work at Miami of Ohio University and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada.

Along with numerous national and regional exhibitions, Gillespie has been a visiting artist at several universities, including the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Clemson University, West Virginia University, Mississippi State University, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Texas at Tyler. Gillespie's work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Nelson- Atkins Museum, the Fogg Museum, the Kemper-Group Collection in Chicago, and at the Clemson University and Arizona State University Art Museums.

Gillespie directed the Bradley National Print and Drawing Exhibition from 1986 to 1991 and currently coordinates Bradley's Cradle Oak Press Facility, which invites noted artists to campus to create original editions of prints. He is an active member of the national printmaking community, with membership on the Board of the Mid-America Print Council.
